This one projects. The body is cut and pierced iron - hollow patterned metalwork rather than a solid shade - so the single bright LED inside throws the cut pattern outward onto whatever is nearby. Hung close to a wall, a fence or the ground, the lantern paints that surface with light and shadow, and the effect is considerably more interesting than a lit bauble in a border.

It measures 15cm in diameter by 17.3cm high, which is large enough to read as an object rather than a trinket but small enough to hang from a branch without a substantial fixing. The material is art iron with a plastic cover over the electronics, and a press switch on the solar panel turns the unit on. Once switched on, it charges naturally through the day and lights itself at dusk with no further input.

One super-bright warm white LED does the work, powered by a polycrystalline 2V 80mA panel charging a single 1.2V AA 400mAh Ni-MH cell, which is included. Because the output comes from a single point source rather than a diffuse array, the projected pattern stays sharp - a diffused light would blur the cutwork into a soft glow and lose the whole effect.

Getting the Projection Right

Projection depends entirely on distance. Hung close to a surface - within roughly 20 to 40cm of a wall, a fence panel or the ground - the pattern is tight, bright and sharply defined. Hung further out in open air, the pattern spreads, dims and eventually disappears, leaving only the lantern itself glowing. If the cutwork effect is why you are buying it, plan the position around a surface for it to fall on.

Where It Works Best

It can be hung from an outdoor tree, a pergola, a porch hook, a shepherd's hook or a fence, and it can equally be placed anywhere that gets full sun - a lawn, a balcony, a courtyard, a patio, a doorstep or a border. Because it is entirely self-contained it can also be picked up and carried as a lighting lamp when going out to a shed, a bin store or a greenhouse after dark.

A group of two or three works better than one, particularly against a long fence run, because the overlapping projected patterns read as a designed effect rather than a single novelty. Keep them at similar heights and similar distances from the surface so the patterns are consistent in scale.

Charging and Placement

Place the product where it gets a full day of direct sunlight and adjust the panel angle towards the sun for the fastest charge. Direct sun, not ambient daylight, is what charges a solar cell, and a position under a canopy or against a north-facing wall will give a much shorter evening than one in the open.

Wipe the panel clean with a dry cloth periodically, since dust and pollen reduce charging efficiency noticeably. Avoid hanging the unit where a porch light or street lamp shines on it, as ambient light can prevent the dusk sensor from triggering. If the lantern stops lighting a full evening, suspect the position or a dirty panel before suspecting the battery.

Care and Safety

The lantern is intended for outdoor use but should not be submerged or left standing in water, and it is sensible to bring it in during prolonged storms or heavy snow. Art iron will weather over time outdoors; some surface patina is normal and part of the material's character rather than a fault.

For long periods of non-use, switch it off and store it somewhere dry, cool and frost-free to preserve the cell. Hang it at a height where it cannot be walked into, and keep it clear of barbecues, fire pits and other heat sources. This is decorative atmosphere lighting, so do not rely on it to light steps or level changes.

Effect: hollow iron cutwork projects patterns onto walls and ground

Size: 15cm diameter x 17.3cm high

LED: one super bright warm white LED for a sharp pattern

Power: 2V 80mA solar panel with AA 400mAh Ni-MH cell included

Switch: press switch on the panel, then fully automatic

Body: art iron with plastic cover over the electronics

Best for: fences, walls, paths, lawns, balconies, courtyards

Tip: hang within 20 to 40cm of a surface for the sharpest pattern

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1098/0622/3699/files/Metal_lantern_hanging_on_porch_20260925170704.jpg?v=1790352444
https://elumalighting.store/products/outdoor-garden-solar-light-iron-art-hanging-light-hollow-led-landscape-light-garden-decoration-projection-light-waterproof
