Multiple strand lengths and bulb counts are available to suit different spaces.

Strung overhead, a globe strand changes an outdoor space more than any other single piece of lighting. Light comes from above and from many points rather than from one bright fitting at the edge, so faces are lit evenly, shadows stay soft and the area beneath reads as a room rather than a patch of garden. That is why festoon lighting has become the default for terraces, courtyards and events, and why the length you choose matters more than the specification.

The set is solar powered at 3.7V with the LED bulbs included, rated IP65 and built in ABS, and it is listed as dimmable - which is unusual on a solar strand and genuinely useful, since a long run at full output is often brighter than an evening outside needs. Assembly is required, and the panel charges through the day so the strand lights itself at dusk with no cable, socket or transformer involved.

Choosing the Length and Bulb Count

Eight combinations are listed, from a 7 metre run with 11 bulbs up to a 30 metre run with 50. Two things vary independently: the total span and the spacing between bulbs. A 10 metre strand with 15 bulbs is widely spaced and reads as classic festoon lighting; a 9.5 metre strand with 25 bulbs is denser and brighter along the same span. For a terrace or a pergola, measure the run including the sag you want between fixings and add a margin - a strand hung with a gentle curve uses noticeably more length than one pulled taut. For a large garden or a marquee, the 18 and 30 metre runs are what actually reach.

Where It Works Best

Courtyards and patios, pergolas and gazebos, balcony rails, fence and boundary lines, between trees, over a garden table or an outdoor dining area, around a summerhouse or a garden room, and across a marquee or a party space. For events they are one of the simplest ways to light a wedding, a birthday or a garden gathering where no power is available. The one requirement is daylight on the panel, so site it in the sunniest position with a clear view of the sky - it can sit several metres from the lit run.

Hanging a Festoon Run Well

The difference between a run that looks professional and one that looks improvised is entirely in the hanging. Fix at regular intervals with hooks, cup hooks or cable ties so the sag between fixings is even - uneven sag is the single most visible fault. Run the strand in a shallow zigzag or a single sweep overhead rather than tight along a wall, since the effect depends on light coming from above. Hang it above standing eye level so nobody looks straight into a bulb, and on a long run use a straining wire to carry the weight rather than the cable itself.

Charging, Dimming and Care

Run time follows the charge the panel takes: full afternoon sun gives most of an evening, partial shade gives considerably less, and midwinter or a run of overcast days will shorten it further. On a long strand, running at a lower dimmed level extends the evening noticeably as well as suiting the atmosphere better. Clean the panel occasionally, since dust and pollen reduce charging over a season. The IP65 rating means the set can stay out through the year, though coiling it loosely and storing it over a hard winter will extend its life.

Key Details

Power source: solar

Outdoor globe string-light format

Available lengths from approximately 7 m to 30 m

Bulb counts vary by selected strand
