Both variants use a solar-powered lantern format with warm decorative lighting.

A hanging lantern does something a staked or wall-mounted light cannot: it puts light above head height, in the middle of a space rather than at its edges. Suspended from a pergola beam, a branch or a shepherd's hook over a table, it lights faces and food from above the way a pendant does indoors, which is what makes an outdoor seating area feel like a room rather than a patch of garden with lights around it.

Because it is solar powered, none of that needs a cable. The panel charges through the day and the lantern lights itself at dusk, so it can hang at the far end of a courtyard, over a table in the middle of a lawn, or from a tree with no supply anywhere near - positions where running an outdoor circuit would cost more than the lighting.

Rattan or Iron

Two bodies are listed and they give quite different results. The woven rattan-style body is open, so light escapes through the weave as well as the ends, throwing a fine pattern of shadow onto the table, the paving and the surrounding planting. It reads natural and relaxed and suits a coastal, boho or planted garden. The iron body is solid, so light is directed down in a cleaner pool with a defined edge, and the silhouette reads more traditional and architectural - the better choice for a formal courtyard, a brick or stone setting, or a scheme with black metalwork already in it.

Where to Hang It

Pergola and gazebo beams, tree branches, shepherd's hooks, porch hooks and wall brackets, the frame of a garden structure, a summerhouse veranda, or a hook over a garden table. Hanging it over the middle of a seating or dining area is what makes the most of the format. The requirement is daylight on the panel: a lantern hung beneath a solid pergola roof or under dense tree cover will not charge properly, and its evening run time will fall well short. Where the canopy is solid, hang the lantern at the edge rather than the centre.

Lighting and Atmosphere

The warm decorative glow is atmosphere rather than illumination - enough to define a table and the faces around it, not enough to light a path or provide security lighting. That is the right level for an evening outside, and it is why hanging lanterns are usually best in a group: two or three at staggered heights over and around a seating area do far more than one bright fitting. In the rattan version the shadow pattern is a large part of the effect, so hang it where there is a surface below for the pattern to land on.

Charging and Care

Site the panel where it has the clearest view of the sky and expect run time to follow the charge: full afternoon sun gives most of an evening, partial shade gives considerably less, and midwinter or a run of overcast days will shorten it further. Clean the panel occasionally, since dust, pollen and rain marks reduce charging noticeably over a season. Check the hanging point after windy weather, particularly on a branch. The rattan-style body should be kept out of standing water and brought in over a hard winter to extend its life.

Key Details

Material options: rattan-style or iron

Power source: solar

Hanging outdoor lantern format

Choose the required material before ordering

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1098/0622/3699/files/2_ce66e25d-f76a-48d0-b34f-0d5221525580.png?v=1787430125
